STORY 4:
THE LINE
BY JOHN LEWELL
Inspiration
The Line is part of a larger project I am working on, which will tell the story of the Holocaust through a musical. The Line uses song to signify Ruth's journey on the Kindertransport to Britain and the historical displacement of the Jews. The poem expresses humanity's vulnerability to indoctrination, manipulation, and propaganda and attempts to, like Ruth's art, reflect on the chaos and fragility of our existence. The narrative of the poem and song is traumatic. Still, Ruth's story is not all sad, and the piece needed to carry a solid thread of hope, and this is done with the song's chorus. The images reinforce the onscreen text and the song lyrics. They were carefully selected to evoke negative and positive emotions.
